Tourney Report: Blues686 on his “Battle in the Big Apple” victory

10 02 2009

Hey everyone! blues686 here with a tournament report from the Battle in the Big Apple event held this past Saturday.

I was looking forward to this event as it would be my first real chance to play in a modern environment since the mega weekends. Even though I knew I was going to get a verbal beat down by some of the players there (Boy did I get one! lol) I decided to take the Exiles deck that I listed on my blog not to long ago.

Here is the list that I played:

Characters
Cable-solder X, x4
Sage- earth 616 x4
Proteus x4- earth 58163 x4
Mimic- earth 12 x1
Blink- earth 295, Clarice Ferguson x4
Mariko yashida<> sunfire- earth 2109 x4
Miguel O’Hara <> Spider-Man x4
Albert- earth 50211 x4

Plot Twist
A clash of worlds x4
A finer world x4
Common bond x4
Bodyslide x4
Beak saves the day x4
Warp shards x4
Heroes of two worlds x2
Mobilize x2

Locations
Panoptichron x3

The Modern Age tournament had a turn out of 20 players and consisted of 6 rounds of swiss followed by a cut to the top 8. (Note taking was very tough for me to do, as many of the matches were very thought provoking. This report is as accurate as I can remember. I apologize in advance if there are any errors)

Round one
I was paired off against Joe Brian from California who happened to be in the area for the weekend. You may know him as member of team Edge world. I won initiative. I opted for evens and this is how it went down.

Clandestine Contemplations – Battle of the Venues

1 12 2008

ccWell the first thing I have to mention today is that I have a name for my articles now! Congratulations to Lupercl for coming up with this, and thanks to all that entered. Unfortunately I can’t remember who did enter, and in the switch over the original article with its comments isn’t around any more, so please comment on this one. I have lots of prizes and given there weren’t that many entrants I reckon I can spare something for everybody.

Tournament report – BYOT, Super-crossover sealed and Team Battle Royal

5 08 2008

August 2nd saw the Bring Your Own Team format descend on Fantasy Wargames in Luton as we got together for a day of Vs. System play. We had twelve people show up for the event, which is half a dozen down on last months attendance, but still a decent number. The TO had decided that he wanted to run multiple events on the day. With several different boxes of stock, he wanted to run Super-Crossover sealed after the BYOT event. I was particularly pleased with this, having not had a chance to participate in the format as of yet. He also had something special planned for the end of the day.

The missing Rallying Cry: Onyxweapons of Mass Destruction

23 07 2008

A couple of weeks ago, an episode of Rallying Cry didn’t make it past the VSSystem.com editors due to some – shall we say – slightly riské language and references on the featured blog.  Personally I thought that was rather harsh, but it’s not my call.  I thought that the blog in question deserved it’s moment in the sun, so while my star may not be as bright as the mothership, I give you the missing edition of Rallying Cry featuring Aaron “Onyxweapon” Mead:

Tournament Report: Golden Age Legend event (Fantasy Wargames)

26 06 2008

This month we held a Golden Age Legend event at Fantasy Wargames in Luton (UK), which was very well attended with a wonderful selection of decks.

We chose Golden Age specifically because a lot of the players in Luton have only recently started playing Vs again. A lot of people dropped away after the X-Men expansion but in the last six-months, the player base has grown strongly.

Random Punks tournament report: By Felix Hughes

22 05 2008

Luton Random Punks Tournament Report

Vs has been a little quiet locally as people move around into new jobs and wait for Marvel Universe to turn up, so I’ve been looking around at playing where I can. My plans to go to Sheffield were scuppered by British Rail (or at least some signalling problem cancelled the train I was sitting on), so the next thing available was the Random Punks tournament in Luton.

This actually sounded quite a lot of fun to me. I wasn’t expecting a deadly serious tournament by any means and it being Golden Age meant I could come up with something a bit unusual and play a bunch of cards I liked quite happily. I ended up with 3 ideas overall.

UK Nationals report by Felix Hughes 2008 UK National Champion

10 04 2008

Hi there,

Welcome to my report on the (Unofficial) 2008 UK Championships. Be warned. It’s a bit long.

For those that don’t know me, my name is Felix Hughes and I’m a long time comics fan and card player, so VS is pretty much the perfect game for me. I started out slow with a Spiderman starter and a few Marvel Origins boosters, and kept up with this playing crazy multi-player games until the arrival of Marvel Knights. This was the first set with a bunch of characters I actually liked (I had loads of old Ghost Rider comics, so I actually knew who people like Vengeance and Anton Hellgate were for one thing), and I loved the idea of concealed characters (and KO’ing people).

The UK Nationals report

7 04 2008

Early in the registration process

Six am, April 5th. I wake up, walk down the stairs and make myself a double espresso. It’s the morning of the “Unofficial” UK National Championships and I’m awake far earlier than I would like. I decide to make the most of it and go over everything for the day ahead of me. For a few weeks now, I’d been flipping between three decks for the tournament.

The first was a decklist that Brian Eugenio sent me involving my favourite team in the game – X-Statix. The list was solid, using Marvel Knights in concert with X-Statix, so as to gain access to Wild Ride. Dagger and Micro Chip are the starting point of the deck, forgoing a two-drop, and from then on, it’s standard X-Statix. Zeitgeist on 6 is ridiculously good and the Spider-Man, The Spectacular Spider-Man a turn later locks down their board until Ghost Rider takes out a good portion of the opposition. Finally, we have a booster Professor X, Mental Master to steal the biggest threat. In then end I decided that the deck was just a little too wobbly. It would have been an entirely sentimental choice. The other twodecks I was torn between were the Secret Society and Marvel Knights builds (with a couple of tweaks) that I had posted on VSSYSTEM.COM. After much soul searching, I decided to go with the man with two guns. Read the rest of this entry »
