Who Watches the Watchtower? Part 1

11 04 2008

Dave “Bungo Underhill” Pyrah puts out some really nice video blogs pertaining to Vs. System.  You should check out his Pyrahmancy page over on youtube and peruse his older content.  Today though, we bring you an interview with the man with the most awesomest playmat at the UK Nationals – me.  Dave grabbed a few words with me in retaliation for me cornering him for question time.  There will be more to come, so make sure you subscribe to his channel!

UK Nationals report by Felix Hughes 2008 UK National Champion

10 04 2008

Hi there,

Welcome to my report on the (Unofficial) 2008 UK Championships. Be warned. It’s a bit long.

For those that don’t know me, my name is Felix Hughes and I’m a long time comics fan and card player, so VS is pretty much the perfect game for me. I started out slow with a Spiderman starter and a few Marvel Origins boosters, and kept up with this playing crazy multi-player games until the arrival of Marvel Knights. This was the first set with a bunch of characters I actually liked (I had loads of old Ghost Rider comics, so I actually knew who people like Vengeance and Anton Hellgate were for one thing), and I loved the idea of concealed characters (and KO’ing people).

The UK Nationals report

7 04 2008

Early in the registration process

Six am, April 5th. I wake up, walk down the stairs and make myself a double espresso. It’s the morning of the “Unofficial” UK National Championships and I’m awake far earlier than I would like. I decide to make the most of it and go over everything for the day ahead of me. For a few weeks now, I’d been flipping between three decks for the tournament.

The first was a decklist that Brian Eugenio sent me involving my favourite team in the game – X-Statix. The list was solid, using Marvel Knights in concert with X-Statix, so as to gain access to Wild Ride. Dagger and Micro Chip are the starting point of the deck, forgoing a two-drop, and from then on, it’s standard X-Statix. Zeitgeist on 6 is ridiculously good and the Spider-Man, The Spectacular Spider-Man a turn later locks down their board until Ghost Rider takes out a good portion of the opposition. Finally, we have a booster Professor X, Mental Master to steal the biggest threat. In then end I decided that the deck was just a little too wobbly. It would have been an entirely sentimental choice. The other twodecks I was torn between were the Secret Society and Marvel Knights builds (with a couple of tweaks) that I had posted on VSSYSTEM.COM. After much soul searching, I decided to go with the man with two guns. Read the rest of this entry »

Wow,

Oh, but that’s still not the major announcement.

Thank you Ben and UDE for this recognition.

UK NationalsI can now confirm (because I currently have them in my sticky paws) two more prizes for the UK Nationals.  I will be donating these prizes myself, because, you know, I’m nice like that.

UK Nationals prize update

28 03 2008

The UK Nationals are closing in day by day. The even kicks off on Saturday, April 5th and I’ve just stumbled across some news regarding an updated prize pool that features over 300 EAs!This is not the full list of prizes, but it fills in one of the blanks we had before. We knew that there would be a few EA’s thrown in, but this is quite a pool to be split between the players and it ensures that everyone who turns up will get something.
